Magarsus – Karataş, Adana
Magarsus was the port city and religious center of Mallus, an important city of ancient Cilicia. It is located in the Karataş district, near the mouth of the Ceyhan River. It is known that Alexander the Great visited here and sacrificed at the Temple of Athena Magarsia.
Highlights:
- Ancient Theatre: A theatre with a sea view, seating approximately 3,000 people. It has been largely uncovered in recent excavations.
- Temple of Athena Magarsia: Although its exact location has not yet been determined, it was the city's most important sacred structure.
- Walls and Cisterns: Ruins belonging to the city's defense and water systems.
