Soli-Pompeipolis – Mezitli, Mersin
Located in the Mezitli district near Mersin city center, Soli was an important port city founded by Rhodian colonists in the 7th century BC. After being destroyed by pirates, the city was restored by the Roman general Pompey in 67 BC and renamed Pompeipolis.
The most prominent ruin of the city is the monumental Colonnaded Street extending from the harbor into the city.
Highlights:
- Colonnaded Street: Lined with Corinthian columns, this street reflects the city's grandeur. Some column capitals feature human figures and busts.
- Harbor: Remains of the ancient harbor are partially visible.
- Sun God: The name "Soli" relates to the Sun, and depictions of the Sun God are common on the city's coins.
