Alinda – Karpuzlu, Aydın

Alinda is one of the most fortified cities of Caria, built on steep cliffs. It is the place where Queen Ada of Caria took refuge after being exiled from Halicarnassus by her brother Pixodarus. Queen Ada welcomed Alexander the Great here and adopted him as her son.

The city's most impressive structure is the massive Agora (Market Place) building.

Highlights:

  • Agora: This three-story, 90-meter-long structure is one of the best-preserved agora buildings in Anatolia.
  • Theatre: A remarkably intact theatre commanding a view of the landscape.
  • Aqueducts: Ruins of arches that carried water to the city.
  • Walls and Towers: Defensive structures with excellent stonemasonry.
