Simena (Kaleköy) – Demre/Kaş, Antalya
Simena is a fascinating Lycian city in the Kekova region, accessible only by sea or footpath (no road access). Known today as Kaleköy, it faces the sunken city of Kekova Island.
The city is famous for its medieval castle and sarcophagi submerged in water.
Highlights:
- Simena Castle: Used in the Middle Ages, the castle offers a magnificent view of Kekova. Inside, it houses the world's smallest theatre (or odeon).
- Submerged Sarcophagus: A Lycian sarcophagus standing in the water due to rising sea levels, now a symbol of Simena.
- Necropolis: Numerous Lycian-type sarcophagi are located behind the castle.
