Anemurium Ancient City – Anamur, Mersin

Anemurium ("Windy Cape") is a significant port and commercial city of Rough Cilicia, located at the southernmost tip of Asia Minor (Cape Anamur). While its existence dates back to the 4th century BC, the city reached its peak during the Roman period (2nd-3rd century AD).

The most striking feature of the site is its necropolis, one of the best-preserved in Anatolia. It contains approximately 350 tomb structures with vaulted ceilings and tiled roofs, some of which are two stories high. Frescoes and mosaics can still be seen on the inner walls of some tombs.

Key Structures:

  • Theatre and Odeon: The Odeon (concert hall), with a capacity of about 900, is in excellent condition. The theatre faces the sea.
  • Baths: There are large bath complexes (Large Bath and Small Bath) featuring floor mosaics.
  • Churches: Ruins of basilicas from the Early Christian period are present.
  • Aqueducts: Remains of the water supply system are visible.

The city was largely abandoned in the 7th century AD due to Arab raids and earthquakes. With its city walls, theatre, baths, and especially its necropolis, Anemurium offers a comprehensive view of a Roman provincial city.
