Amorium – Emirdağ, Afyonkarahisar
Amorium was one of the most important cities in Anatolia during the Byzantine Empire and the capital of the Anatolic Theme (military province). It held a strategic position on the military road from Constantinople to Cilicia.
The city consists of two parts: the Lower City and the Upper City (Mound). Its siege and conquest by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tasim in 838 (Siege of Amorium) is a significant event in Islamic and Byzantine history.
